What I do? I help smart people (the qualified and credentialed) to “own their value” so that they can stand out as trusted experts and leaders in their industry. This time my audience was comprised of #physicians and #scientists, current Faculty members from the Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University. This year marks my 15th year as a #universityprofessor. Two years at James Cook University in Australia, and the past 13 years at Roger Williams University in the United States. I have taught a variety of courses, including media studies, broadcast journalism, public relations, media relations, crisis communication, communication in organizations, and public speaking. However, my most seminal work has been teaching and #coaching people on #personalbranding. Why? Many professionals mistake their #personalbrand for their job title or simply having a #socialmedia presence. Or worse, they pursue #highereducation without a clear understanding of why they are doing it or what they plan to do with the degree. Today, while I am #teaching my mass media class, a young man said: “Professor, this question is a bit off topic. I have a a job interview on Monday and would love your help to prepare”. Me: This would require an intensive #personalbranding session to help you. “Is this for an internship or a full time job?” It was the latter. He is graduating with an engineering degree and already on the #jobmarket. Me: Why should we hire you? Him: [he rambles something about willing to learn etc; nothing cogent or persuasive]. I had to intervene as this is where many people get stuck. If you don’t know your value, you wont be able to articulate it. In the middle of class, I did a quick skills discovery session and found out he was good at technical drawing, renderings etc. We discussed how he might create a narrative around his process. In the next ten minutes, I had him articulating his value to potential employers. A true legend of #Reggae music has left us. Michael "Ibo" Cooper. What a mark he and his band "Third World" made on global music and what a #leader he was in the creative sector. But let his colleagues in the music industry talk about that. I want to remember "Ibo Cooper" as the beautiful human being he was. His #personalbrand was anchored on his own selfhood and humanity embodied in the way he connected anf engaged with people - not as a celebrity or "star" but as a #mentor and motivator. By extension, this gave him a strong sense of community manifested in his stellar contributions to the artistic community in #Jamaica, that gave him roots and formed a large part of his own identity I met Ibo back in 1995 when I was a young college student at the University of the West Indies. The guild of students (led by St. Lucian national, Armstrong Alexis) had staged a street demonstration to protest the shipment of plutonium through Caribbean waters. That time, if it was egg, I was in the red, as they say. We'd invited several entertainers including Ibo Cooper, Tony Rebel and Buju Banton to join us in the streets of Kingston. To our glee, they showed up and we chanted "No plutonium, blow your horns" 😁🤣😎. Ibo was the leader and I marveled then at the their capacity to attract attention and news coverage of a student action just by their presence and influence. I met Tony Rebel at this same event. Ibo was a great mentor to "Rebellious" (he's gutted by this loss). Ibo and me became fast #friends and it would be such a joyous occasion everytime I'd run into him. He thought I was hilarious and should go into drama and acting as I'd clearly missed my calling. 🙈🙌 This photo was taken in 2018 when I was visiting Jamaica and caught up with Ibo at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts. It truly captured the camaraderie we had and the genuine affection we had for his other. I was privileged to work alongside his son Arif who passed earlier this year at Fame FM back in the day. This exhibition, now on at the #GeorgeEastman Museum in Rochester, New York, angered me as much as it moved me. Eastman is the founder of the famous Eastman Kodak company that made it easy for us to take a #photograph. He literally revolutionized #photography and gave us the first handheld #kodak cameras for over 100 years. Of course, until the digital age when they didn't bother to adapt so they were forced to close down.The photo and film museum is a must see. Yet what fascinated me most was the ode to the power of photography such as this work by photographer #GillianLaub whose work among others are on display at the museum. She photographed what was became known as the "#segregatedprom" which stirred a movement for change in a small town in Georgia in 2014. #Backstory: Between 1954 and 2013, the Wilcox Counry High school in Georgia held seperate #proms, one for Black students and one for whites. This extraordinary story was highlighted by photographer Jillian Laub who came under vicious attack for documenting the #racism which persisted here for decades. But she persisted. Community folks felt she was disrupting their "traditions" and shaming them. The story was picked up by the New York Times and other media organizations. National media coverage caused outrage and forced an "integrated prom" for the first time in 2013. The #exhibit recounts the voices of both white and black students, some of whom couldn't date each other for fear of attacks by parents. Those who did lived in fear for their lives. Most compelling exhibit I've seen in so long. A true story of courage.
