I was just 17 years old, stepping into my very first #publicspeaking class—an eager teenager with a big dream of becoming a communicator.
I wasn’t nervous, exactly. I was unsure. Unclear of what I brought to the stage. Uncertain of how to “own” a room.
The class was led by Wycliffe Bennett, a commanding British gentleman who had trained some of #Jamaica’s finest voices.
On the day of our first audition, I walked into the room, ready to speak. But he stopped me.
“Walk back out,” he said.
Then again...And again.
Each time, I walked in - confused, trying harder. Until he said words I’ve never forgotten:
? “You are apologizing for your presence... Occupy space”
I didn’t even realize my #bodylanguage was betraying my confidence.
That I was shrinking myself before I even said a word.
That day taught me a truth I’ve seen over and over again in my years as a speaking and #communicationcoach:

This year, I had the profound honor of serving as #FacultySpeaker for the School of Humanities, Arts and Education (SHAE) at Roger Williams University.
I spoke to our graduates about entering a world where degrees aren’t enough; where who you are and the value you bring matter more than ever.
I urged them to lean into their #humanskills—empathy, communication, leadership - essential skills so urgently needed in this moment .
To anchor themselves in their core values and personal brand—not for likes, but for life.
As progress around #DEI faces backlash, I shared how, as a Black woman and immigrant, I feel this moment deeply.
But I reminded them: now is not the time to shrink.
I asked them to use their voice not just for yourself but for others. To stand for what is right and be brave enough to lead us forward.

I was born with a #speechdefect. If I ever write a memoir, I’ll call it "Born to #Speak." But the truth is, it’s really my mother’s story. I was born in mid-1970s #Jamaica with a #speechdefect that made it hard to speak clearly. Back then, kids like me were often left to live with it. No treatment. No support. Just silence, shame, and a future full of limits. The social stigma would be unimaginable. I basically be called "dumb" and effectively discarded by society. But my mother had other plans. She faced the stigma. She asked questions. She found doctors. She pushed for surgery. (*I had two surgeries before I was 5 years old)* Then, my mother sat with me through months of #speechtherapy. She did what most wouldn’t because she believed I deserved more. I inherited her courage, but I also inherited her silence. It’s taken me over 30 years to talk about this part of my life. Today, I speak because she fought for my voice. And now, I help others find theirs, too. You see, I’d always defined myself by my professional role, and job title.
So after years of being a Ph.D. candidate, I had no clear direction.I had not set any clear goals besides “finding a good job.” (*big mistake*).
I was unsure what to do next with my #career.
I was in panic mode.
I realized that my professional identity could not be tied to a job or title because I had none.
It was time to redefine myself..

Your degree is a nice achievement but it doesn’t define your worth. Nor it is a good gauge of what you can deliver.
