MEET DR. HUME

Founder and Chief Brand Strategy Partner Hume Johnson Consulting

Dr. Hume Johnson, author of the best selling book, Brand YOU!, and Founder and CEO of Hume Johnson Consulting, is a sought after personal branding strategist, consultant, speaker; political scholar and Professor of Communications. 


She is a global authority on a 'brand-centric' model of career development and leadership, an approach which foregrounds the personal brand as part of an individual's equity and personal capital, assets that organizations need to tap into for growth and productivity.


Dr. Johnson is currently a full-time tenured professor of public relations and media studies at Roger Williams University (Rhode Island, USA). She teaches the following courses: Introduction to the Mass Media, Public Speaking, Public Relations Techniques, Media Relations, Crisis Communication as well as the introductory personal branding course she designed and piloted for seniors entitled ‘Personal Branding, Perception & Self- Marketing’. Hume comes to Roger Williams from James Cook University, Australia where she taught both in the journalism and public relations curriculum.


Early Career Journalist + Political and Education


Dr. Johnson is a former broadcast journalist. She was a news anchor with the Jamaica Information Service (JISTV), Radio Jamaica and FAME FM. Hume was also a leading branding and communications consultant in Jamaica, serving as publicist for iconic Reggae singer Tony Rebel, and consultant and political speechwriter with the Government of Jamaica, working with Senators to build their brand and craft their political message. 


Hume holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Waikato, New Zealand. Alongside her work on branding and leadership development, she is undertaking pioneering work in the area of branding within the context of nation states (nation branding), governance and the  challenges of building civil society in developing countries. 

 

She currently is a contributing writer for Entrepreneur Magazine, and recognized media expert. Her commentary has appeared on BBC, CBC, CBS, NBC, O’Globo, Jamaica Gleaner, Television Jamaica, CVM Television and Al Jazeera.

Political Scholar


Dr. Johnson is an interdisciplinary political scholar. Her research focuses on three overlapping areas of study: political participation and activism (with attention to popular protests and civil society); democratic governance, specifically issues of development, crime, statecraft, party politics and public policy; the brand and identity of nation states (nation branding, with a specific focus on 'Brand Jamaica').

Challenges to Civil Society: Protest and Governance in Jamaica

This book undertakes an in-depth case study of contemporary protests to illustrate not only the challenges to building civil society in Jamaica but demonstrates that the official literature perpetuates a universal misunderstanding and misrepresentation of civil society by variously denying its capacity and tendency to be negative and uncivil.
