About Hume

Dr. Hume Johnson is a Branding and Communication Strategy Consultant, Associate Professor of Public Relations at Roger Williams University, Rhode Island, USA,  a speaker, broadcast journalist, political analyst, author, and coach.

Through her communications consultancy, Hume Johnson Consulting, Hume designs and delivers training programs to assist her clients to develop resonant messages, convey their stories with clarity, confidence and credibility, respond to sensitive and emerging issues, improve their public speaking skills, work productively with the media, re-imagine and re-invent themselves or their brands in order to get noticed and heard in today’s noisy media environment.

Her clients include: Roger Williams University Communication Program, Housing Works, Rhode Island, Town of Coventry (Rhode Island), Building According to Pattern, LLC, Miss Rhode Island 2016, Theresa Agonia, People’s National Party (Jamaica), Ministry of National Security (Jamaica) Power 106 FM/Music 99 FM, Centre for Leadership and Governance, Rebel Salute Music Festival, former Government of Jamaica Senators, Basil Waite and Kern Spencer.

A former national debater, and champion speaker, Hume is a now frequent speaker at academic conferences, industry events and symposia worldwide. She delivered the keynote address at the 4th Biennial Conference of the Jamaica Diaspora, Birmingham, United Kingdom, 2014. She delivered a powerful public lecture at the Jamaican High Commission, London, 2014 entitled “Harnessing Jamaica’s Brand for Economic Growth”, and the keynote at the Brand Jamaica Symposium, Kingston Jamaica, 2015.

Dr. Johnson is also a recognized political analyst. Her political commentary appears in a variety of global media, including NBC 10 news (USA), Al Jazeera English, City Metric and Transform Magazines (United Kingdom), O’Globo newspaper (Brazil), Jamaica Gleaner newspaper, Radio Jamaica, Television Jamaica and CVM Television (Jamaica), The Bay Magazine (USA) and The Waikato Times (New Zealand).

Hume is a fully certified Public Speaking and Communications Practitioner having trained in both the Caribbean and New Zealand, and with global practitioner experience in Australasia, China, Europe and the UK United States. She holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Waikato, New Zealand, MSc. (Hons) Political Science from the University of the West Indies (Jamaica), and a BA in Media and Communications (Major Television Broadcasting) from the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communications (CARIMAC), University of the West Indies.

She has held the following positions: Television Presenter at Jamaica Information Service Television (JISTV), News Anchor, Jamaica News Network (JNN), News Reader, FAME FM and RJR 94 FM (Radio Jamaica), Political Speechwriter, Ministry of National Security (Jamaica), Media Consultant, People’s National Party (National Elections), Media Aide, Public Relations Executive, Rebel Salute Music Festival, and Political Advisor on the Prime Ministerial Youth Advisory Council of former Jamaican Prime Minister, P.J. Patterson established to assess and advise the Prime Minister on government policy and performance.

Hume is the author of Challenges to Civil Society: Popular Protest and Governance in Jamaica (Cambria Press, New York) and “Brand Jamaica”: Re-imagining Jamaica’s Image and National Identity” (forthcoming, University of Nebraska Press).

She is currently working on her third book entitled Build Your Brand, Be a Better Speaker: Six Steps to Success.

Finally, Dr. Johnson enjoys partnering with community groups and institutions to achieve successful societal outcomes.  She is a member of, or contributor to the following organisations:

  • Member – Advisory Board of City, Nation, Place – a new forum for those responsible for branding strategies for their cities, nations and regions.
  • Member –  Community Advisory Board of the United Way of Rhode Island.
  • Member – Southern New England Association of Black Journalists (SNEABJ).
